Period Three Discussion

Time to go cray in the comments! Well, not really. Remember what we said in class:

1. Each student needs to post at least once in the comments section of their period's blog post.
2. Posts should be about Day 1 or Day 2 reading, and can be either a discussion question, or an answer to someone else's discussion question.
3. Try to keep questions and answers roughly equal... if you see there are more questions than answers, add a question. If you see more answers than questions... pose a question!

Some additional suggestions:
  • include page numbers if you're asking a question
  • make sure it's clear who you're answering- either reply directly to a question, or state in your comment which question you're referring to

Example:
Question- Why does Curley's wife hurry away when Slim tells her that Curley went into their house? (32)
Answer- She might be afraid of Curley; perhaps she knows he's looking for her, and she's afraid he might be angry if he can't find her. We know Curley is pugnacious, so maybe he is easily angered and becomes abusive to his wife.

    1. Carlson wants to shoot Candy’s dog because it is too old and stinks. Carlson feels the dog is a burden; it is too old and weak to perform the job of a sheep dog. He believes killing Candy’s dog is the right thing to do, for it would put the dog out of misery.

    2. Also, so that Carlson can give one of the puppies to Candy to raise it.

  2. Question: Why do George and Lennie want a dog so badly? Up until this point of the story, it looks like Lennie wanted rabbits.

    2. It is because Lennie wanted a pet that he wouldn't kill if he petted, and was soft and furry. A dog would fit that criteria.

  3. Why did the dog kept moved its head up and down when Curley looking into the room? It seems like the author is trying to foreshadow something with that part at the end of the chapter. (pg. 37

    1. Maybe the author is foreshadowing that the dog is going to die soon.

  6. Is the Great Depression going on right now in the story? It doesn't really seem like any economic problems have been mentioned yet.

    1. Yes it is because George and Lennie are migrant workers who move from place to place in search of a new job opportunities during the Great Depression

  7. Why does George hate Curly just from the first time they meet? (pg. 26)

    1. I think it was because he felt that Curley was looking down on Lennie and him with his glance, and since he was the boss' son, he was acting really arrogant. Also, George probably felt that Curley was looking for fight with his buddy, Lennie, and thought that it was rude and mean.

    2. First of all, the author described Curley as "pugnacious," which we defined as belligerent, which isn't a trait people tend to like. Also, he seemed to talk to George and Lennie condescendingly. The tone of his voice was a commanding and harsh one. In addition, he was particularly nosy about Lennie. Because George doesn't want to lose his job again because of Lennie or for Lennie to be mistreated due to his mental disability, he's trying to keep it low, which shows why he is so persistent on only him talking.

  8. Curley seems to be disliked by most of the other characters as well, so I think that he is just a type of person that most people do not like because they go looking for trouble. Also, he basically threatens Lennie that if Lennie does not talk to him the next time that Curley says something to him then he would do something to him and George seems to be very protective of Lennie, as later on he tells Lennie to stay as far away as he can from Curley.

  9. What is George and Lennie's relationship? Because they aren't cousins and even though they travel together, Lennie is a burden to George and the two aren't exactly best friends.

    1. I think their relationship somehow just formed since they knew each other for a long time. George may have allowed Lennie to tag along because they both need work and they have no one but each other.

    1. Probably because he feels slim is trustworthy, the kind of guy that doesn't report people because he just doesn't really care.
