Day 5 (Period 7)

Instructions if you need them:

1. Each student needs to post at least once in the comments section of their period's blog post.
2. Posts should be about Day 5 reading, and can be either a discussion question, or an answer to someone else's discussion question.
3. Try to keep questions and answers roughly equal... if you see there are more questions than answers, add a question. If you see more answers than questions... pose a question!

Some additional suggestions:
  • include page numbers if you're asking a question
  • make sure it's clear who you're answering- either reply directly to a question, or state in your comment which question you're referring to

  1. Why does Curley's wife change her attitude towards Lennie so much? Didn't she not like him and called him dumb? But now she's talking to him because she's "lonely" (pg 86), and even let's him stroke her hair. Then she yells at him for "mussing it up".

    1. I think this is because Curley's wife was restricted to do a lot of things. She has been denied by her husband to have any forms of communication to the rest, as shown on Page 88. She wanted company, and Lennie was the only one that was consolable, and did actually respond to what she was conveying.

    2. I think she is using his mental disability to her advantage and abusing the fact that he really doesn't know what he's doing. We know that she is just the type of person that likes to look for trouble in every situation she gets into. I think that she is trying to get Lennie into trouble from her husband or the workers in the farm.

    3. I think she knows Lennie is the only one she can talk to without getting pushed away (except Curley, of course) precisely because he's dumb. She did say Lennie was a nice person, so he was probably better to talk with than the others anyway, since she needed company. Although, I don't think she expected Lennie to start being so rough with her hair, and she may have started to panic at that time...maybe.

    4. I think that Curley's wife is trying to assert her dominance, and really the only person she is able to do this to on the farm is Lennie, because of his vulnerability. I think that she feels superior over Lennie so she is talking to him in this way in order to have that feeling of superiority.

    5. As most people said, I think Curley's wife just wants to have a feeling of power. The only person who can be under her at the time would have been Lennie, so she uses him to her full advantage.

    6. I think Curley's wife does this because she's lonely. Everyone else on the farm pushes her away, but Lennie is the only one who doesn't mind her company (mostly because he doesn't know any better)

  2. Do you think Lennie actually stole Carlson's gun before he ran away? (pg 97) I honestly don't think he would've even thought about taking a gun with him. If you think Lennie actually did take the gun, why would he?

    1. I don't think Lennie stole the gun, because if he wouldn't even strike Curley, then while would he take a weapon along with him?

    2. I don't think Lennie stole Carlson's gun because his initial reaction was to run to the bush that George told him to go to if he gets into trouble. I don't believe Lennie would think as far as getting something to use to defend himself.

    3. Lennie didn't even fight back when Curley was beating him up, until George told him to. I don't think he would think of taking a gun as self defense.

    4. I don't think that Lennie stole the gun. Everybody thinks he did because it is what seems to be the only logical explanation to what is a very stressful situation. Also, because of mob mentality, once one person suggests a prejudice, that prejudice keeps on snowballing.

    5. No, I don't think lennie would think of stealing anything. He is usually very dumb, and cant come up with his own ideas because he relies on George to tell him what to do.

  4. If Lennie was to run away like how Candy said he should, do you think Lennie would survive?

    1. No, I do not think that Lenny would survive in the wild by himself. because he does not possess the mental capabilities to provide for himself. By Thomas Holden Samuels

    2. He probably could survive for a certain amount of time (maybe a week?). First of all, he knows where to find water, so he won't die of thirst on the second day. Nextly, he probably won't find any food, so he'll probably survive a week, maybe more or less.

    3. Lennie wouldn't survive for that long because as Gio said he does have water, but no food. Also that hes not that smart enough to know how to survive. Lennie needs someone who can take care of him, cause he cant take care of himself.
