Period Four Discussion

Time to go cray in the comments! Well, not really. Remember what we said in class:

1. Each student needs to post at least once in the comments section of their period's blog post.
2. Posts should be about Day 1 or Day 2 reading, and can be either a discussion question, or an answer to someone else's discussion question.
3. Try to keep questions and answers roughly equal... if you see there are more questions than answers, add a question. If you see more answers than questions... pose a question!

Some additional suggestions:
  • include page numbers if you're asking a question
  • make sure it's clear who you're answering- either reply directly to a question, or state in your comment which question you're referring to

Example:
Question- Why does Curley's wife hurry away when Slim tells her that Curley went into their house? (32)
Answer- She might be afraid of Curley; perhaps she knows he's looking for her, and she's afraid he might be angry if he can't find her. We know Curley is pugnacious, so maybe he is easily angered and becomes abusive to his wife.

  1. Why do you think the description of Slim is so grand? Do you think he will actually be all of these things? (Page 33)

    1. I believe the description of Slim is true to his character and does, in fact reflect his actual skills and abilities. Also, in the eyes of George and Lenny, Slim is like their guide and mentor. He knows the place well and is the first person to be very friendly towards them. Slim also seems to understand their situation, having to travel from place to place.

  2. I think that Lennie understands that Curley is a bad man that he dislikes, but his understanding doesn't go deeper than that. I think he's just obeying what George is saying because he is a bit scared of George

  3. I agree with what Sai said but I don't think Lennie is scared of George. I think he's more scared of picking a fight with Curly or getting hurt, and that's why he's listening to what George tells him, since George always seems to know what to do.

  4. If George is not Lennie's cousin, like he said at the top of page 24, why does he have to take care of Lennie?

    1. I feel that George takes care of Lennie as like they said in Day 1, they're special because they have each other. Also, they share a dream and they're good friends.

    2. I think that since George and Lennie are traveling together, going to work together, and might share the same future, George will feel responsible for Lennie. Also, Lennie seems to always look to George for help, so George might get the feeling that he has to help him out.

    3. Agreeing with what Daniel said, on page 14, George describes retells their dream to tell Lennie and how they are special because they have each other. Because of this thinking, I think that they have each other's backs and will always take care of each other. But of course, George will have a bigger responsibility because as he says on page 22, Lennie isn't that bright.

    4. I agree with what Alex and Daniel said. George feels responsible for Lennie, mainly because of how helpless and innocent George is. Lennie is also a better worker, which would help boost George's rep, so the relationship isn't completely one-sided.

  5. I think that Lennie is both scared of picking a fight with Curly and losing George's and his job. It is because he already caused to lost their job back at Weed , and since Curly is the boss's son, which means that if Lennie messes up with Curly, Curly might tell on his father, to have them fired. Lastly, if the two lose their job because of Lennie, George will get really mad at Lennie for losing their jobs again.

  6. I feel like Lennie is only doing what George is telling him to. It is possible that he feels obligated to do exactly what George says, considering he disobeyed George's will back in Weed, and ended up getting them chased out, and also losing them their jobs. So even if Lennie has the slightest inkling the do the smart thing and disobey George, he may feel indebted, and quash that inkling with his resolve to be good and repay for his errors in Weed.

  7. I agree with kathleen that lennie is only doing it so that george wont get mad at him and migh leave lennie. But also i think that lennie has a little common sense and really doesn't want to get hurt messing with Curley

  8. Is Slim important compared to the boss? (Because on page 33 he was described very majesticaly.)

    1. I believe that the boss is the one who has authority, but Slim is the one that everyone else seems to respect, and the boss knows this. Like on page 23 the boss down talks Slim and his "his team". The boss is just doing his job and honestly (at least for right now) seems like a background character. The boss is in an important role, but as important to the story compared to Slim (at least for right now).

    2. I believe that Slim is more important than the boss because he was described in more detail than the boss, at least so far. The men seem to get along with Slim and respect him. Slim also seems to have some authority- his own barley team. Plus the author didn't even bother giving the boss a name, even though he already appeared in the story, which shows that Slim is not just important compared to the boss, but he's more important than the boss.

    3. I agree with Richard, because the boss is important however most of the people respect slim more than they respect their boss.

    4. I feel as if the boss is the one with the hard power and Slim is the one with the soft power.

  9. What do you think will happen when Curley eventually picks a fight with Lennie? Why?

    1. I think Lennie will be pretty much helpless and ask George for help, because Lennie is not an aggressive or mean person, despite his large size. He is not a fighter. It is likely that if George is there, he will take control of the situation, or he will tell Lennie to do something. Lennie probably won't hurt Curley unless George tells him to.

    2. I agree with Morgan, because Lennie might not understand why they got into a fight in the first place. George might try to guide Lennie, but knowing Lennie's personality, it probably won't end well. Your question also foreshadows that Lennie may have to meet George in there "safe" haven, in the forest.

    3. I agree with both Morgan and Swaathi, since Lennie will be much more inclined to follow George's instructions after what happened in Weed. I think Lennie knows to steer clear of Curley, but doesn't understand why. When the fight does come, I predict that Lennie won't fight back. However, I think that George will come to Lennie's defense, since George was also irritated by Curley.

    4. Lennie will look for George and maybe Curley accidentally hurts George. Then Lennie panics and starts defending George and fights back Curley. Which causes a lot of trouble and might get them fired.

  11. Why don't the author mention more about Lennie's dead aunt?

    1. I believe it's since Lennie's aunt is kind of inferior to the plot of the story

  12. Why dose George care about Lennie so much?

    ReplyDelete

    1. George cares about Lennie so much because they depend on each other for everything. George doesn't have anybody else, he feels obligated to take care of Lennie. George could leave Lennie right then and there for his happiness but he doesn't.
