Day 5 (Period 3)

Instructions if you need them:

1. Each student needs to post at least once in the comments section of their period's blog post.
2. Posts should be about Day 5 reading, and can be either a discussion question, or an answer to someone else's discussion question.
3. Try to keep questions and answers roughly equal... if you see there are more questions than answers, add a question. If you see more answers than questions... pose a question!

Some additional suggestions:
  • include page numbers if you're asking a question
  • make sure it's clear who you're answering- either reply directly to a question, or state in your comment which question you're referring to

  1. Since Carlson knows from previous experience that Lennie was a nice guy and would not kill Curley's wife out of "meanness", why does he still support Curley in finding Lennie as fast as possible and killing Lennie? Is it just for the fact that Lennie stole his gun?

    1. Because he knows what they will do to Lennie when they catch him, and he wants to spare Lennie from that cruelty.

  2. Why and how did the puppy die in the barn (pg.85)

    1. The puppy tried to bite Lennie when they were playing. Lennie, who didn't know his own strength, accidentally killed the puppy by hitting it to hard.

  3. Who do you think is the fault for Curleys' wife's death?

    1. I think it was Curley's wife's fault because if she didn't scream and freak out, Lennie wouldn't have panicked and snapped her neck, and she should have known that Lennie was dangerous and shouldn't have let him pet her hair.

    2. I disagree with Spencer. I think its actually Lennie's fault because he did not know his strength and so he pet her too hard.

  4. Why did Lennie get mad at his dead puppy?

    1. Lennie worries that George will be angry and will not let him raise the rabbits on their farm

  5. Why does Curley's wife open up to Lennie? Why does she tell him her past?(88)

    1. I think Curley's wife wanted to have Lennie know her story and feel bad for her. I think that she likes him and also wants to relate to him

    2. Additionally, to add on to Will, I think that maybe she told him because she could "trust" him. The only thing that's on his mind is rabbits and the dream he shares with George. So, the fact that his mind is simple might mean that he doesn't judge people as harshly as others and does only what he is told to do.

  6. Why do you guys think George shot Lennie himself?

    2. I think it's so no one else can do it. George has known him the longest, and sincerely believed he didn't mean to kill Curley's wife. I think George wanted to let Lennie die with a peaceful, happy thought.

  7. Why do the men treat Candy as if he is on the same social status as Lennie? Is it only because he is missing and arm and therefore is considered disabled? (98) (Slim tells him to stay and watch over Curley's wife)

  8. At the end of Day 5 Reading, Curley was really mad that Lennie strangled his wife to death. But why did he seem so mad (not even sad) at his wife's death? It also seemed really weird because in the book, Curley's wife said she didn't like Curley and they never really had a good relationship.

    1. I think that since they never had a good relationship from the start, they only got married to have a "title" that they're "married". Also, there's no love between them, which I think was why Curley seemed more mad than sad. He was mad because it was like he was insulted and humiliated that someone killed his wife so easily, and that he couldn't protect her. Also, this situation added anger to the anger he already had when Lennie broke his hand.

  9. Do you think it would've been better for Lennie to be locked up or shot?

    1. I feel like being shot was better for Lennie because he has a disability. Usually people who have disabilities like Lennie need to have human interactions or else they will go crazy. Also since Lennie likes working and moving physically, being stuck in a cell would be torturous for him.
