Day 4 (Period 4)

Make it count this week folks! Since I'm out and you have a sub, we'll track a lot of our discussion here. I'll be checking the comments while I'm away.

Instructions if you need them:

1. Each student needs to post at least once in the comments section of their period's blog post.
2. Posts should be about Day 4 reading, and can be either a discussion question, or an answer to someone else's discussion question.
3. Try to keep questions and answers roughly equal... if you see there are more questions than answers, add a question. If you see more answers than questions... pose a question!

Some additional suggestions:
  • include page numbers if you're asking a question
  • make sure it's clear who you're answering- either reply directly to a question, or state in your comment which question you're referring to

  1. How do you think Curley's wife figured out that Lennie was the one that made Curley's hand into a mess?

    1. Curley's wife figured out Lennie was the one the made Curley's hand in to a mess because Curley and Lennie showed signs of a fight on their faces.

  2. I think she pieced together Lennie's bruised face and Curley's crushed hand. They both surfaced at approximately the same time, so it couldn't have been hard to figure out.

  3. I also think that she was able to connect Lennie's face and Curley's hand together because they both were around the same time, and also Lennie didn't have an excuse. He simply said, "He got his han' caught in a machine" (80).

  4. Why did Crooks back out of his offer to work the land?

    1. I think Crooks backed out of his offer because he was frightened of the consequences that might befall him if the boss, Curley, or Curley's wife found out that he wanted to leave. Also, he was probably reconsidering leaving the ranch where he had been for a long time, to pursue a possibly hopeless dream where he might be treated even worse than he is now.

    2. Curley's wife walks in right after Crooks offers to work on the land that George, Lennie, and Candy are going to buy. Then, she reminds him of how he is a negro and makes him feel worthless. This might make Crooks feel that he doesn't deserve to work on their land.

    3. I agree with Helen and Daniel, but I believe that Crooks realizes that George didn't want anyone to know about the plan other than Candy, Lennie, and him when he says that to Lennie (when George comes back from a place). So, maybe Croos felt like he was "intruding" their plan

  6. Why is Curley's wife so interested in Lennie? Does she have her own personal reason?

    1. I think Curley's wife just may have been trying to be nice to Lennie, since Lennie is just like a child. However, given the background information about Curley's wife and the way she acts, she might be trying to get on Lennie's good side, possibly because she doesn't want to get hurt like her husband. She might also try to get on Lennie's good side so that she can use him, since Lennie is tall and strong.

    2. I agree that she might just have been trying to be nice, but I think she was genuinely lonely and wanted to talk to someone other than Curley. I can understand that she doesn't like Curley since he has such a bad attitude toward other people. Also, Lennie was the only person whom she got a desirable response from, because all the other men tried to ignore her.

    3. I think Curley's wife is taking advantage of Lennie because it's obvious that he usually doesn't know the situation and he doesn't know how to control himself. Like Ria said, maybe shes trying to get Lennie to guard her against Curley because she knows Lennie hurt Curley last time and she doesn't like Curley.

    4. Curley's wife may want someone to socialize with other than Curley, but since the other men stay away fro her she can only talk to Lennie because he doesn't know whats going on.

  7. Why do you think Crooks eventually lets Lennie come into his bunk room?

    1. I think Crooks realizes that lennie is a nice guy and because crooks is always alone he wants someone to talk to.

    2. I think that Crooks eventually saw that Lennie's mind could be messed with. So after he found that out, he let Lennie in to see if he could talk to someone for once while Lennie just wanted to talk about his pup.

    3. I think that Crooks was lonely because he didn't really talk to anybody except for the horseshoe games, and so he just wanted someone to talk to. When he realized that Lennie was really no harm, he decided to take the advantage of company, which was very rare for him.

    4. I think that Crooks feels that Lennie is just as much as a social outcast as he is. Also, Crooks is just as lonely as Lennie, so he doesn't mind the rare company. On the other hand, Crooks might just find pleasure in teasing Lennie, because he was scorned his entire life as well. (page 68)
